Belarus Exiled Opposition Leader Visits Kyiv as World Leaders Watch Minsk’s Role in War

Exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya visited Kyiv Monday as world leaders scrutinized Minsk’s role in Russia’s war against Ukraine. The trip took place while the capital was still clearing debris from its most devastating missile attack of the year.

Tsikhanouskaya met Ukrainian officials to discuss sanctions coordination, information operations and support for Belarusian volunteers fighting alongside Ukraine. She has campaigned from exile since a disputed 2020 election and subsequent crackdown by President Alexander Lukashenko.

Western capitals have accused Belarus of facilitating Russian logistics and missile launches from its territory. Lukashenko denies direct combat involvement but maintains close security ties with Moscow.

Ukrainian leaders portrayed the visit as a signal that democratic Belarusian forces remain partners. Analysts said the timing highlighted linkages between authoritarian consolidation in Minsk and Kremlin military strategy.

Tsikhanouskaya pledged continued sanctions against Belarusian officials facilitating Russian logistics. Minsk rejected the visit as propaganda while denying direct participation in missile launches. Ukrainian civil society groups hosted forums on democratic solidarity in wartime.

Belarusian diaspora groups in Warsaw and Vilnius held solidarity rallies coinciding with the visit. Ukraine’s foreign ministry thanked Tsikhanouskaya for moral support while stressing the need for material aid.

European Parliament members issued a statement welcoming cross-border democratic solidarity visits to Kyiv.
