Content of national importance, security clearance for key posts: What’s in I&B ministry’s draft rules for TV, radio

India’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry published draft rules Friday that would require television and radio broadcasters to carry content of national importance and obtain security clearance for key editorial posts.

The proposed framework mandates periodic transmission of government-designated programming on socially relevant themes, with penalties for persistent noncompliance.

Stations would also face background checks for senior appointments deemed sensitive to public order or national security.

Industry associations said they are studying the language for potential conflicts with existing licensing conditions and constitutional free-expression guarantees.

The ministry invited stakeholder comments before finalizing regulations that could reshape prime-time scheduling and hiring practices across India’s broadcast sector.
