Episode 49 of the Halemaʻumaʻu eruption begins at the summit of Kīlauea volcano

Lava began fountaining within Halemaʻumaʻu crater Saturday as Kīlauea volcano entered Episode 49 of its ongoing summit eruption, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported.

Scientists raised the alert level after thermal cameras detected vigorous spattering and renewed magma movement beneath the caldera floor inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Park officials warned visitors to stay on marked trails and avoid downwind areas where volcanic gas and fine ash can accumulate quickly.

Geologists said the episode follows a familiar pattern of short-lived summit activity that has punctuated Kīlauea’s behavior since the 2018 lower-east-rift eruption ended.

Air quality monitors on the Big Island tracked fluctuating sulfur dioxide readings as trade winds shifted plumes across the island chain.

Emergency managers emphasized that communities far from the park face little direct lava threat but should monitor official updates if vent locations change.
