Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has named a 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, with veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer making a surprise return as first choice.
Neuer, 40, came out of international retirement to earn a fifth World Cup appearance. He had stepped away after Euro 2024 but reversed that decision following a strong season at Bayern Munich. Nagelsmann confirmed Neuer will start ahead of Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nubel.
Joshua Kimmich will captain the four-time world champions. The squad includes Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz, Leroy Sane and Nico Schlotterbeck. Five Premier League players were selected, among them Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade.
Germany open Group E against Curacao on June 14 before facing Ivory Coast and Ecuador. The team will play a friendly against Finland in Mainz on May 31 and travel to Chicago on June 2. Notable omissions include Karim Adeyemi, Niclas Fullkrug and Robert Andrich. FIFA requires final 26-player lists by June 2.
Neuer has 124 caps for Germany and won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Jonas Urbig was named as a fourth goalkeeper backup. Germany will play the United States in a friendly on June 6 in Chicago before opening World Cup group play against Curacao on June 14.
