India Two New Wetlands Added to Ramsar List Taking National Total to 93

India’s government announced the addition of two wetlands to the Ramsar Convention’s list of internationally recognized sites, bringing the national total to 93. Ramsar designation commits countries to conservation and wise use of listed wetland ecosystems.

Wetlands provide flood control, groundwater recharge, fisheries, and habitat for migratory birds. India’s expanding Ramsar portfolio reflects policy emphasis on protecting critical water bodies amid development pressures.

The two new sites join a network spanning high-altitude lakes, coastal mangroves, and inland marshes across multiple states. International recognition can unlock technical assistance and tourism interest while imposing monitoring obligations.

India has accelerated wetland listings in recent years as part of broader environmental diplomacy and domestic biodiversity goals. Each designation requires management plans addressing pollution, encroachment, and hydrological alteration threats.
