India, U.S. chief negotiators to hold four-day trade talks from June 1

Stakeholders responded on June 1, 2026 after trade negotiators opened a four-day round in the capital. Chief negotiators from India and the United States opened four days of talks in New Delhi on June 1, 2026.

Related filings and briefings added that the U.S. delegation is led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch; India’s team is headed by Commerce Department additional secretary Darpan Jain.

Parallel announcements clarified that both sides aim to finalise legal text for an interim trade agreement whose framework was announced on February 7.

Subsequent updates explained that under that framework the U.S. had agreed to reduce tariffs on Indian goods, but subsequent U.S. court rulings and a uniform 10% tariff order have altered the trade backdrop.

Separately, india was the second-largest U.S. trading partner in 2025-26, with exports of about $87.3 billion and imports of $52.9 billion.

In addition, commerce Ministry briefings said negotiators would address customs facilitation and investment promotion.

The same reports noted that washington launched Section 301 probes on excess capacity and forced labour claims that New Delhi rejected.

Authorities also said new Delhi has offered to buy about $500 billion of U.S. energy, aircraft, metals and coal products over five years under the framework.

Further context from the day indicated february’s joint statement had envisioned U.S. tariffs on Indian goods falling toward 18% from higher reciprocal levels.

Observers will watch whether follow-up orders alter the current framework.
