Jan-Lennard Struff wins marathon five-set thriller as Hurkacz retires

Jan-Lennard Struff advanced when Hubert Hurkacz retired midway through the deciding set of their marathon five-set Wimbledon third-round match.

Hurkacz, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist from Poland, struggled with a physical issue that forced him to stop play. Struff, a German veteran, had battled for more than three hours before the retirement.

Hurkacz’s grass-court pedigree made the match a test for Struff, who capitalized on opportunities in extended rallies. Retirement endings remain among the most abrupt conclusions in Grand Slam tennis.

Struff moves into the fourth round for another opportunity against higher-ranked opposition.
