Mumbai building collapse kills six, including five children, amid heavy monsoon rain

A building collapse in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area killed six people, including five children, as heavy monsoon rain battered the city on July 5, 2026.

The structure collapsed around 8:30 p.m. at Chawl No. 5 in Janta Nagar. Victims included children aged two to fourteen and a 32-year-old woman. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said the shanty was illegal and operated as a goods-stacked godown on government land.

Residents had received multiple eviction notices, according to civic sources. Several parts of the city recorded more than 200 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a red alert.

Rescue teams searched debris for additional victims as schools and colleges were ordered closed the following day.
