NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope released a portrait of globular cluster Messier 3 containing roughly 500,000 stars, timed for America’s semiquincentennial.
Globular clusters are dense spherical collections orbiting galaxies, containing among the oldest stars in the universe. Messier 3 lies about 34,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici.
The image demonstrates Hubble’s ability to resolve individual stars in crowded fields. Astronomers study globular clusters to understand stellar evolution and galactic formation.
The release formed part of a series of Hubble images packaged for Fourth of July commemorations in 2026.
