National Medical Commission clarifies mandatory local clinical licence requirement for Georgian medical graduates

The National Medical Commission issued an advisory clarifying that Indian students graduating from medical institutions in Georgia must obtain independent medical practitioner registration in Georgia to become eligible for India’s Foreign Medical Graduate Examination. The statutory regulatory body emphasized that holding a provisional diploma or completion certificate alone does not satisfy the requirements of the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations.

The clarification was released following numerous petitions from overseas graduates seeking exemptions from local Georgian residency and language requirements. The commission reiterated that under Regulation 4, foreign medical degrees are recognized in India only if the graduate possesses an unencumbered license to practice medicine on equal footing with domestic practitioners in the country where the degree was granted.

Student welfare associations expressed concern, pointing out that Georgia’s medical regulatory framework imposes complex linguistic examinations and hospital internships before granting independent practice permits. Educational consultancies advised prospective medical aspirants to verify licensing pathways meticulously before securing admissions in foreign universities.
