News Analysis: UPI transactions hit record high of ₹29.9 lakh crore in May

Officials and agencies addressed a developing story on June 1, 2026 as digital payment rails set fresh volume and value records in May. Unified Payments Interface transactions reached a monthly record in May 2026, NPCI data showed.

The same reports noted that the network processed 23.2 billion transactions worth ₹29.9 lakh crore in May.

Authorities also said volume rose about 4% from April’s 22.35 billion transactions; value climbed about 3% from ₹29.03 lakh crore.

Further context from the day indicated payment industry executives linked the surge partly to summer travel, IPL 2026 spending and seasonal retail activity.

Related filings and briefings added that year-on-year UPI value rose about 19% from ₹25.14 lakh crore in May 2025.

Parallel announcements clarified that average daily transaction value in May was about ₹96,465 crore, according to NPCI-derived averages cited in trade press.

Subsequent updates explained that cross-border UPI is live in more than eight jurisdictions including the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal and Mauritius.

Separately, credit-on-UPI remains in early stages but is cited by payment executives as a potential next volume driver.

Officials said further steps would be announced as reviews continue.
