PIB Fact Check Unit has issued over 2,900 verifications on government-related misinformation

India’s Press Information Bureau Fact Check Unit has issued more than 2,900 verifications addressing government-related misinformation, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said.

The unit tracks forged government notifications, fake letters attributed to ministers, deepfake audio and manipulated images circulating on messaging apps and social platforms. Rapid sharing on WhatsApp and Telegram has made official debunking a routine government function.

PIB Fact Check operates under the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and posts rulings on social media with archived references. Topics range from fabricated subsidy announcements to false claims about military operations.

Officials said the volume of verifications reflects both the scale of misinformation and increased public reliance on government channels for authoritative corrections.
