Trump orders execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan by Army firing squad

Former President Donald Trump approved an executive directive authorizing the execution of convicted mass murderer Nidal Hasan by military firing squad, endorsing formal recommendations presented by defense adviser Pete Hegseth. Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was sentenced to death by a military court martial in 2013 for the fatal shooting of thirteen soldiers and injuring over thirty others at the Fort Hood military base in Texas in 2009.

The directive instructs the Department of the Army and military corrections authorities at the United States Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth to finalize procedural protocols for carrying out the capital sentence. Legal scholars observed that carrying out a military execution requires complex administrative clearances under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, as no service member has been put to death by military authorities since 1961.

Advocates for surviving victims and military veterans’ families welcomed the executive move as long-delayed justice for the victims of the deadliest terror attack on an American domestic military installation. Defense attorneys are expected to submit emergency federal petitions testing constitutional jurisdictions over military capital execution protocols.
