Flash floods and landslides triggered by extremely heavy rainfall have killed at least 12 people in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Rajouri districts, officials said Tuesday.
The India Meteorological Department had issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall for the region in the days before the disaster, as monsoon rains intensified across the Union Territory. Several roads and bridges in the affected districts were damaged or washed away, hampering rescue and relief operations.
Local administration and disaster response teams have been deployed to the affected areas to search for survivors and clear debris from blocked routes. Authorities have not ruled out a rise in the death toll as rescue operations continue in the hilly terrain.
Residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas of Poonch and Rajouri have been advised to move to safer ground as the region remains under continued rainfall alerts.
