Sarvam AI co-founder Vivek Raghavan featured on TIME100 AI 2026 list for vernacular language models

TIME magazine released its prestigious annual TIME100 AI list on Friday, honoring prominent global innovators shaping artificial intelligence, with Indian technologist and Sarvam AI co-founder Vivek Raghavan earning widespread international recognition for his pioneering work in vernacular language models.

Raghavan, who previously anchored digital public infrastructure design initiatives under the National Language Translation Mission and Aadhaar, was commended by the publication for developing foundational AI architectures engineered specifically to parse the linguistic nuances, diverse dialects, and low-resource scripts of the Indian subcontinent. The citation highlighted how Sarvam generative audio and text models have bridged digital divides by enabling millions of non-English speakers to interact with governance platforms via natural voice interfaces.

Industry leaders and technology policymakers celebrated the global acknowledgment as validation of India burgeoning sovereign AI ecosystem. In his public remarks, Raghavan reiterated that designing accessible, culturally nuanced language technologies remains fundamental to ensuring that transformative digital tools benefit every strata of society equally.
