Oman pitches new commercial deep-water port project to strengthen Indian energy access

Senior maritime delegations from the Sultanate of Oman presented an ambitious investment proposal to Indian commercial counterparts on Thursday, inviting Indian infrastructure developers to participate in constructing a state-of-the-art deep-water terminal along Oman’s southern coastline. The strategic port facility is envisioned as a dedicated logistical hub facilitating crude oil transshipment, green hydrogen bunkering, and container handling.

Trade negotiators noted that the planned maritime complex offers direct deep-sea berths bypassing narrow maritime choke points in the Persian Gulf, drastically trimming voyage transit times for Indian crude tankers and cargo vessels. Omani officials highlighted preferential maritime tariffs, dedicated customs processing corridors, and specialized warehousing zones available to Indian industrial consortia.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader maritime expansion strategy under the Sagarmala initiative, which emphasizes bilateral connectivity networks across the western Indian Ocean rim. Technical working groups are scheduled to finalize preliminary engineering blueprints and bilateral financing mechanisms before intergovernmental agreements are signed later this year.
