JSW Steel, ONGC lead Nifty gainers; Axis Bank, Tata Motors top losers

Trading on the National Stock Exchange on Monday highlighted sharp sectoral divergences, as metal producers and public sector energy companies resisted the broader market selloff to lead the gainers list. JSW Steel emerged as the top performer on the Nifty 50, advancing 2.06 percent on strong domestic volume deliveries, closely followed by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, which gained 1.35 percent supported by firming international oil prices.

In sharp contrast, private banking institutions and commercial automobile manufacturers suffered heavy liquidations that weighed heavily on benchmark indices. Axis Bank dropped 4.19 percent to become the worst performer of the session following margin compression concerns, while Tata Motors tumbled 3.09 percent amid reports of slowing commercial vehicle sales and subdued overseas deliveries.

Equity analysts noted that defensive rotation into upstream energy counters provided only temporary cushions against extensive equity drawdowns. Portfolio managers indicated that institutional investors will closely monitor subsequent second-quarter earnings scorecards to reassess valuation premiums across cyclical manufacturing and financial sectors.
