Lok Sabha Speaker inaugurates 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum 2026

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum at Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi on Monday, convening legislative leaders and parliamentarians from across the multilateral bloc. In his opening address, Birla called upon member nations to utilize parliamentary institutions as engines for inclusive governance, socioeconomic advancement, and equitable development. He emphasized that legislative bodies carry an essential mandate to represent citizen welfare while navigating complex global economic challenges.

The forum convened delegations from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, alongside newly admitted member countries, to deliberate on inter-parliamentary cooperation, sustainable development goals, and multilateral reforms. Birla highlighted the critical role of emerging technologies, advocating for robust policy frameworks to govern artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure ethically. He stressed that technological innovation must bridge societal disparities rather than exacerbate digital divides among developing economies.

Discussions throughout the opening session centered on strengthening South-South cooperation, reinforcing rules-based international trade, and enhancing climate finance mechanisms for the Global South. Parliamentary leaders acknowledged the increasing importance of inter-legislative diplomacy in addressing shared geopolitical frictions and humanitarian priorities. The multiday summit includes committee sessions dedicated to youth empowerment, gender parity in public administration, and legislative oversight of international agreements.
