India’s Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved capital acquisition proposals totaling ₹2.12 lakh crore to enhance the operational readiness and combat capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Demonstrating a sustained push toward indigenous self-reliance under the Make in India initiative, approximately 82 percent of the total procurement value will be sourced directly from domestic defence manufacturers and public sector shipyards.
The comprehensive Acceptance of Necessity clearances encompass modern weapon systems, next-generation surface vessels, specialized electronic warfare suites, and long-range precision munitions designed to counter emerging security challenges across land and maritime borders. Key naval approvals include contracts for indigenous stealth frigates and multi-role maritime reconnaissance aircraft, while ground force allocations focus on advanced armored fighting vehicles and tactical air defense networks.
Ministry of Defence officials highlighted that awarding the vast majority of capital acquisitions to Indian enterprises will significantly invigorate the domestic industrial base, foster technological innovation, and create skilled manufacturing jobs across MSMEs. Strategic defence analysts welcomed the council’s sweeping approvals, noting that modernizing military hardware through indigenously developed platforms substantially bolsters India’s long-term strategic autonomy.
