On Accession Day, Mehbooba reminds Centre of promises, says trust broken

Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti marked Jammu and Kashmir’s Accession Day on Monday by urging the central government to honor the historic political compact entered into when the princely state joined the Indian Union in 1947. Addressing party cadres and reporters in Srinagar, the former chief minister asserted that Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession based on constitutional guarantees of internal autonomy, which she argued were unilaterally dismantled in August 2019.

Mufti contended that the revocation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into union territories eroded the fundamental trust between local citizens and New Delhi. She stated that sustainable peace and institutional stability in the frontier territory cannot be realized through administrative decree alone, emphasizing the need for genuine political reconciliation and the restoration of statehood alongside democratic rights.

The PDP chief also addressed contemporary governance issues, expressing concern over unemployment, administrative centralization, and the alienation of local youth. Political observers noted that Accession Day continues to evoke contrasting political narratives across the region, with regional parties emphasizing constitutional autonomy while national ruling authorities commemorate the day as a symbol of permanent integration.
