Tamil Nadu to set up 26 POCSO Act courts and four NDPS courts

The Government of Tamil Nadu sanctioned the establishment of twenty-six new special courts under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and four dedicated courts under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The administrative order, issued on Sunday, allocates budgetary resources for specialized judicial personnel, prosecution staff, and child-friendly courtroom infrastructure across multiple districts. The major expansion of judicial infrastructure aims to address mounting case backlogs and accelerate trial timelines for child abuse and narcotics prosecutions.

Senior administrative officials stated that establishing dedicated POCSO courts will ensure sensitive, in-camera examinations of child victims, shielding them from hostile cross-examination and secondary trauma during trial proceedings. Similarly, dedicated NDPS courts will expedite the adjudication of commercial narcotics trafficking offenses, supporting state law enforcement campaigns against synthetic drug syndicates. Child rights organizations and legal experts welcomed the government’s decision, commending the state’s proactive investments in specialized, victim-centric judicial infrastructure.
