Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee approached the Calcutta High Court on June 3, 2026, seeking protection from coercive action in a Criminal Investigation Department probe into alleged signature forgery.
The CID is investigating a complaint that signatures of two party MLAs were forged on a resolution naming Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of the Opposition. The Assembly secretariat registered an FIR that was transferred to the CID.
Banerjee did not appear on June 1 after being summoned, citing health reasons, and requested a 15-day extension. The agency rejected the request and issued a fresh notice requiring his appearance on June 8.
A vacation bench led by Justice Apurba Sinha Ray allowed him to file a formal petition challenging the investigation. Counsel said the matter is likely to be heard on June 5. Two complaining MLAs were later expelled from the party.
