Special Leave Petition Filed Against Bhojshala Ruling Listed as Pending Before Supreme Court

India’s Supreme Court registered a petition challenging the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s Bhojshala verdict and listed the matter as pending without immediately scheduling a hearing.

The Special Leave Petition filed by Quazi Moinuddin arrived at the registry as Diary No. 32281/2026 following the May 15 ruling that declared the Dhar complex a Hindu temple site. Muslim parties argue the judgment overturned decades of administrative arrangements governing shared access to the protected monument.

Hindu petitioners filed a caveat requesting that no ex parte interim order be issued without hearing their side. The high court had directed the Archaeological Survey of India to manage the property while granting Hindus unrestricted worship rights and suggesting alternative land for a mosque.

Legal observers said the apex court’s next steps could determine whether Friday prayers resume at the site. Abdul Samad of the Kamal Maulana Welfare Society told reporters the Muslim side would seek to establish historical evidence of namaz at the complex. Tight security remained in place in Dhar district.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court directed the Archaeological Survey of India to retain administrative control while Hindu worship proceeds without the prior shared Friday prayer arrangement. Muslim petitioners said local authorities cancelled namaz permissions citing law-and-order concerns after the verdict. The Bhojshala dispute has simmered for decades over whether the Kamal Maula Mosque and temple complex should allow alternating access.
