Centre notifies Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Amendment Rules 2026 to curb dark patterns and hidden pricing

The Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs notified the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Amendment Rules 2026 on Friday, introducing stringent statutory prohibitions against manipulative digital interface designs, predatory drip-pricing practices, and algorithmic distortion of search results on e-commerce marketplaces.

Under the newly enacted regulatory framework, online shopping applications and travel portals operating in India must display the total comprehensive purchase price upfront, including all mandatory convenience charges, processing fees, and taxes, rather than revealing ancillary costs during checkout. In addition, digital platforms are legally forbidden from deploying fake countdown timers, false scarcity indicators, or forced subscription sign-ups engineered to nudge consumers into unintended transactions.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority confirmed that digital platforms will face substantial civil penalties, corrective advertisement orders, and potential operational suspension for willful non-compliance. Consumer advocacy organizations welcomed the statutory reforms, noting that the rules establish long-overdue safeguards protecting millions of online shoppers from deceptive digital marketing practices.
