OpenAI ChatGPT Memory System Upgraded for Better Contextual Personalisation

OpenAI announced improvements to ChatGPT’s persistent memory system, enabling the model to better recall and apply user preferences across conversations. The upgrade targets a common limitation in which assistants reset context between sessions.

Persistent memory allows ChatGPT to retain information users explicitly or implicitly share over time, such as writing style, project details, or recurring tasks. OpenAI said the enhanced system applies stored preferences more consistently when generating new responses.

Memory features sit at the intersection of personalization and privacy, requiring users to manage what the model retains or forgets. OpenAI’s update focuses on accuracy of recall rather than expanding the categories of data stored.

Cross-conversation personalization is a competitive differentiator among consumer AI assistants. The memory upgrade arrives as users increasingly rely on ChatGPT for ongoing work rather than one-off queries.
