Cowboy Space unveils ‘Big Iron’ rocket to launch 20,000 AI data centers

Aerospace startup Cowboy Space publicly introduced its heavy-lift launch vehicle concept, designated Big Iron, designed to deploy an orbital constellation of up to 20,000 artificial intelligence data center satellites. The proposed architecture aims to address escalating computational and power demands on terrestrial infrastructure by positioning high-density compute nodes directly in low Earth orbit. By utilizing space-based solar power and direct radiative cooling into the vacuum of space, the company envisions offloading substantial computational workloads from ground facilities.

The Big Iron rocket design emphasizes heavy payload capacity and reusable stage architecture to drastically reduce launch costs per kilogram. Company representatives outlined plans for dedicated fairing configurations capable of housing specialized compute modules engineered to withstand cosmic radiation and thermal cycling. The ambitious initiative reflects growing commercial interest in merging satellite telecommunications, distributed orbital infrastructure, and autonomous processing hardware to support global machine learning services.
