The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee directed Karnataka on Tuesday to release 3,500 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days, measuring flow at the Biligundlu gauge from 8 a.m. on July 29.
Chairperson Vineet Gupta convened the 139th committee meeting in New Delhi by video conference with representatives from basin states. The order totals roughly four thousand million cubic feet over the fortnight.
Tamil Nadu officials told the panel the state had received only a fraction of its scheduled share through late July and cited a substantial cumulative deficit against the monthly release chart. Karnataka water resources minister K. Ramalinga Reddy said the government would examine an appeal before the Cauvery Water Management Authority, citing drought stress and drinking-water priorities.
Hydrology advisers noted that dry riverbeds and transmission losses may require Karnataka to release a higher volume from Krishna Raja Sagar and Kabini reservoirs to deliver the mandated quantity at the border.
The committee scheduled its next review for August 11 as both states prepared fresh legal submissions.
