Cyclone Arnab: Odisha announces evacuation of 48,000 in eight districts

The state government of Odisha launched an extensive emergency evacuation operation aimed at shifting approximately 48,000 residents from vulnerable coastal and low-lying settlements across eight southern districts to safe locations. Odisha Special Relief Commissioner Rajesh Pravakar Patil announced the preventative measure during a disaster preparedness briefing, stating that administrative machinery was fully mobilized to prevent loss of life as severe cyclonic storm Arnab advanced over the Bay of Bengal. Specialized relief teams commenced shifting vulnerable families into reinforced multi-purpose cyclone shelters equipped with emergency food, drinking water, and backup power generators.

Patil detailed that local revenue officers, police personnel, and village volunteers were coordinating door-to-door transit efforts, prioritizing expectant mothers, elderly residents, and individuals requiring medical attention. State disaster response units and fire service personnel deployed heavy earth-moving equipment and tree-clearing machinery along arterial highways to guarantee uninterrupted emergency transit routes. The state administration reaffirmed that administrative leaves for essential emergency personnel remain suspended until the weather system makes landfall and post-storm recovery assessments are completed across all impacted southern districts.
