Google published an update to its Android Bench coding benchmark on October 26, evaluating frontier artificial intelligence models on their ability to generate and debug native mobile applications. The results placed Claude Sonnet 5.5 in first place with a 40 percent pass rate, followed closely by Claude Opus 5.5 and OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Sol, while Google’s proprietary Gemini 4 Argon placed fifth overall in the benchmark series.
Android Bench tests models on authentic software engineering tasks specific to the Android operating system, including Jetpack Compose UI rendering, asynchronous coroutines, and framework dependency resolution. The benchmark requires models to parse real-world developer repositories and pass automated Gradle build checks without human intervention.
Google engineers noted that the evaluation highlights distinctive architectural trade-offs in specialized software tasks, emphasizing that mobile application architecture demands nuanced handling of lifecycle management and system-level APIs. The company indicated that future iterations of the Gemini foundation model family will prioritize specialized training sets covering modern mobile programming paradigms.
