IIM-Calcutta allows MBA students to pursue start-ups without losing placement chance

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta revised placement policy to allow MBA students to pursue startups without forfeiting deferred recruitment rights upon returning to campus hiring pools.

Under the change, entrepreneurs who meet academic benchmarks may take a structured gap for venture building and still sit for final placement later in the cycle.

Career services staff will track startup milestones and provide mentoring in lieu of immediate corporate internships for selected candidates.

Alumni investors praised the flexibility as aligning with national entrepreneurship goals, though some recruiters worried about availability during summer internship windows.

The institute said the pilot applies to the incoming batch first, with review after one academic year of outcomes.
