IMD issues widespread rainfall alert as monsoon circulation persists across North India

The India Meteorological Department issued a widespread rainfall warning across the northern plains on Thursday, noting that a persistent cyclonic circulation over southern Haryana combined with an active monsoon trough is generating intense moisture convergence. Radar trackers forecast moderate to heavy precipitation accompanied by gusty winds across Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand over the next seventy-two hours.

Meteorologists explained that moisture-laden easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are colliding with dry westerly currents over northern India, sustaining convective storm clouds capable of delivering localized downpours exceeding sixty millimeters within short durations. Regional municipal authorities were alerted to maintain water pumps at low-lying underpasses and monitor river drainage levels to prevent flash urban waterlogging.

In higher altitude zones of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, district disaster management cells warned travelers against traversing vulnerable mountain highways due to heightened risks of mudslides and rockfalls. Weather scientists noted that the sustained late-monsoon precipitation will enhance soil moisture for upcoming winter rabi crop sowing while boosting reservoir levels across northern river basins.
