Information & Broadcasting Ministry reconstitutes Press Council of India with 13 working journalists

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an official gazette notification reconstituting the Press Council of India, filling critical vacancies by nominating thirteen prominent working journalists across print and regional media categories. The appointments were finalized under statutory provisions of Sections 5 and 6 of the Press Council Act, 1978, reviving the regulatory body’s quorum.

The newly notified council members include seasoned editors, vernacular press reporters, and photojournalists representing diverse journalistic associations and geographical zones. The apex quasi-judicial body is mandated to preserve the freedom of the press and maintain ethical journalistic standards by adjudicating grievances regarding press ethics and professional conduct.

Media industry associations welcomed the reconstitution, noting that the resolution of pending disputes and advisory recommendations regarding digital reporting norms had been delayed due to previous administrative vacancies. The revamped council is scheduled to convene its inaugural statutory session later this month to elect committee heads and review pending complaints.
