Iranian President Pezeshkian urges Washington to honor commitments under lapsed MoU at Bishkek Summit

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on the United States to honor prior diplomatic understandings and de-escalate confrontations across Middle Eastern maritime lanes.

Addressing assembled heads of state in Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian emphasized that durable regional security cannot be attained through unilateral military strikes or coercive naval pressure. He argued that mutual adherence to agreements governing maritime transit and regional dialogue represents the only viable pathway toward preventing broader regional destabilization. The Iranian leader urged member nations, including China and Russia, to support diplomatic initiatives that respect territorial boundaries and lawful commercial navigation in the Persian Gulf.

The remarks came as regional tensions intensified following recent military exchanges between American and Iranian forces. Pezeshkian stated that Iran remains committed to regional engagement but warned that continued military actions against sovereign facilities would compel corresponding defensive responses.

Diplomatic delegates at the Bishkek summit conducted several closed-door bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the plenary session to examine de-escalation frameworks. United States officials in Washington reiterated that diplomatic solutions depend upon Iran halting attacks on commercial vessels and withdrawing support from regional militant factions.

The memorandum of understanding in question originated during multilateral maritime security consultations held under regional mediation, establishing notice periods for naval exercises and dispute mechanisms for intercepted commercial vessels. Pezeshkian maintained that reviving these diplomatic protocols offers a realistic alternative to militarized confrontation, while SCO member states instructed their foreign ministries to monitor regional diplomatic initiatives.
