Jairam Ramesh presses Centre over Great Nicobar clearances

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh renewed objections on June 3, 2026, to environmental clearances granted for the Great Nicobar Island Project.

Ramesh, a Rajya Sabha member, pressed the Centre to explain approvals for infrastructure and development plans on the strategically located island chain. Critics have cited risks to biodiversity and indigenous communities.

The project has been promoted for port, airport and township development with national security and economic justifications. Environmental groups and some local organisations have challenged the pace and scale of clearances.

Ramesh’s intervention adds parliamentary pressure as ministries defend the scheme as vital for connectivity and defence logistics in the Bay of Bengal.
