KC Venugopal Dismisses Congress-TMC Merger Speculation as Totally Baseless Rumours

Senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal categorically dismissed speculation about a possible merger between the Congress party and the Trinamool Congress as totally baseless rumours. Venugopal said no talks of any such alliance were underway.

Media reports had suggested exploratory discussions between the two opposition parties ahead of future elections. Venugopal’s denial was the most definitive rejection from Congress leadership to date.

The Trinamool Congress, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, governs India’s fourth-most populous state. Congress and the TMC have competed against each other in West Bengal while cooperating in broader opposition coalitions nationally.

Venugopal said the Congress party remains committed to its existing alliance structures. Political observers had questioned whether a merger could consolidate anti-government votes in key states.
