Maharashtra CEO proposes amending Form 6 for voters removed during Special Intensive Revision

In a significant administrative proposal to safeguard democratic participation, Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer submitted a formal recommendation to the Election Commission of India requesting immediate procedural amendments to statutory Form 6. The proposed modification seeks to establish a dedicated re-registration category for genuine voters inadvertently struck off electoral rolls during the recently concluded Special Intensive Revision.

Under existing statutory protocols, Form 6 requires applicants to declare themselves first-time voters, exposing previously registered citizens to potential perjury penalties or procedural rejection when attempting to restore their deleted electoral status. The state election chief proposed incorporating a specific checkbox and simplified verification track allowing deleted citizens to verify prior registration history without legal ambiguity.

Electoral reform advocates and political parties endorsed the initiative, noting that thousands of legitimate citizens faced administrative disenfranchisement during large-scale digital deduplication exercises. The Election Commission is reviewing the proposal alongside national technical advisers, aiming to standardize roll restoration mechanisms ahead of upcoming assembly elections.
