Microsoft Introduces Scout the Always-On AI Agent for Microsoft 365 Workflows

Microsoft unveiled Scout, an autonomous AI agent designed to operate continuously across Microsoft 365 applications without user prompting. The agent performs tasks in the background as users work in Word, Excel, Teams, and related productivity tools.

Always-on agents differ from chat-based assistants that respond only when invoked. Scout monitors workflows and executes predefined or inferred actions across the Microsoft 365 suite, reducing manual steps in routine office processes.

Microsoft positioned Scout within its broader push to embed AI agents into enterprise software stacks. The announcement expands the company’s agent portfolio beyond Copilot’s conversational interface model.

Continuous operation raises questions about user control, permissions, and visibility into automated actions. Microsoft framed Scout as a productivity accelerator for organizations already standardized on Microsoft 365 infrastructure.
