Workers began removing President Donald Trump’s name from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington early Saturday after missing a court-ordered deadline.
Crews started dismantling exterior lettering around 1:20 a.m., hours after the Friday midnight cutoff set by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper.
Cooper ruled on May 29 that only Congress may rename the federally chartered venue, rejecting the board’s December decision to call it the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center.
Scaffolding rose along the facade as contractors worked in predawn darkness.
Arts advocates who challenged the renaming said compliance restores the institution’s nonpartisan identity.
