Puducherry NR Congress-BJP Alliance Returns to Power in Union Territory Elections

The All India NR Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party alliance retained control of Puducherry after the April 2026 union territory assembly election, returning Chief Minister N Rangaswamy to office for another term.

Early counting showed the National Democratic Alliance leading in a majority of the 30 constituencies, with Rangaswamy winning his Thattanchavady seat by 4,441 votes over his nearest rival. The BJP added seats to the alliance tally, strengthening the coalition’s grip on the small coastal territory governed as a union territory rather than a full state.

The Congress and its partners faced setbacks, including defeats for senior leaders in several constituencies. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam picked up individual seats but could not challenge the NDA’s overall advantage across the compact electorate.

Puducherry’s assembly governs a union territory with limited legislative powers compared with full states, though local parties wield significant influence over administration and development spending. Rangaswamy has led the territory for multiple terms and remains among its most popular figures.

Puducherry voters cast ballots for 30 assembly seats in April alongside other state and union territory elections across India. The union territory’s limited legislative authority covers areas such as education and agriculture while security and foreign affairs remain under central government control.
