Tamil Nadu DMK Wins State Assembly Election as Vijay’s TVK Makes Strong Debut in Politics

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam under Chief Minister MK Stalin secured a second consecutive term in Tamil Nadu’s 2026 assembly election, while actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam made a notable debut that reshaped the state’s political landscape.

Results declared on May 4 showed the DMK-led alliance retained enough seats to form government in the 234-member assembly, continuing its governance agenda in India’s southernmost major state. The election was held on April 23 across Tamil Nadu, with counting completed after a multi-phase campaign.

Vijay’s TVK, launched in 2024 after the film star retired from cinema to enter politics full time, captured a significant seat share in its first electoral test. The debut disrupted the decades-old duopoly of the DMK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam that had alternated in power since the 1960s.

Political analysts said TVK’s performance signaled a generational shift in Tamil Nadu voting patterns even as the DMK consolidated its hold on executive power through alliance arithmetic and strong showings in southern and western districts.

Actor Vijay campaigned extensively across Tamil Nadu after launching the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in 2024, drawing large rallies in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai. The DMK’s Secular Progressive Alliance included the Congress and smaller regional partners, while the AIADMK contested separately after ending its alliance with the BJP.
