20 rebel Trinamool Lok Sabha MPs seek to merge with Nationalist Citizen Party of India

Twenty rebel Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha members met Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi on June 14, submitting a formal merger letter with the Nationalist Citizen Party of India.

The dissidents said the move provides a registered political home while they pursue Election Commission recognition without immediately triggering anti-defection disqualifications.

Party founder Mamata Banerjee had expelled the bloc after weeks of public criticism over governance and alleged syndicate influence in Bengal districts.

Constitutional lawyers said Birla must verify whether each MP resigned from Trinamool before the merger petition can be accepted for parliamentary purposes.

Analysts on June 14 described the maneuver as the largest Bengal split since the party returned to power, reshaping Rajya Sabha math and state election calculations.

Trinamool general secretary leaders in Kolkata held emergency meetings Saturday evening to assess whether additional legislators might follow the rebel bloc.

Constitutional experts noted that merger petitions require careful scrutiny of whether members resigned from the parent party before joining a new entity.

Opposition parties in the state assembly said they would demand a statement from the chief minister when Parliament reconvenes next week.

Election commission observers in West Bengal said they would monitor any subsequent by-election triggers tied to the rebel lawmakers’ realignment.
