Republic of Djibouti becomes 72nd nation to formally sign NASA’s Artemis Accords

The Republic of Djibouti officially became the 72nd sovereign signatory to the Artemis Accords, endorsing the United States-led multilateral framework governing the responsible, transparent, and peaceful exploration of the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies. In a signing ceremony held in Washington, Djiboutian Ambassador Mohamed Siad Douale executed the founding documents alongside senior officials from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the State Department.

The Artemis Accords establish shared norms grounded in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, emphasizing principles such as the public release of scientific space data, the mitigation of orbital debris, and the deconfliction of space exploration activities. Diplomatic envoys stated that Djibouti’s accession highlights growing interest across East Africa in leveraging satellite technology, aerospace applications, and space science education for sustainable national development.

NASA leadership welcomed Djibouti into the international coalition, highlighting the strategic significance of expanding African participation in shaping international space governance frameworks. The agency reiterated its commitment to supporting collaborative academic exchanges, satellite observation training, and technical capacity-building initiatives with new signatory nations.
