Scientists Discover Why Aging Triggers New Stem Cells That Supercharge Production of Belly Fat

Scientists have identified a population of specialized stem cells that emerges with age and dramatically increases the body’s capacity to produce abdominal fat, a discovery that could reshape how researchers approach age-related weight gain.

The study found that these cells appear during aging and amplify the creation of belly fat, helping explain why many people accumulate fat around the midsection as they grow older even without major changes in diet or activity.

Abdominal or visceral fat is of particular concern to health researchers because it surrounds internal organs and is linked to higher risks of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and metabolic disorders. Unlike fat stored just under the skin, visceral fat is metabolically active and can drive chronic inflammation.

By pinpointing the cells responsible for ramping up fat production later in life, the researchers say it may be possible to design interventions that target this process directly rather than relying solely on diet and exercise.

The work, conducted in laboratory models, points toward potential anti-obesity strategies aimed at the biology of aging itself. Further research will be required to confirm whether the same mechanism operates in humans and whether it can be safely blocked.
