Sensex Up 232 Points Nifty Ends at 23719 as Bank Stocks Shine on Iran Talk Optimism

Indian equity benchmarks closed higher on Friday, May 22, 2026, as banking stocks led gains amid cautious optimism over U.S.-Iran diplomatic contacts and a recovery in the rupee.

The BSE Sensex rose 231.99 points, or 0.31 percent, to settle at 75,415.35. The NSE Nifty 50 gained 64.60 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 23,719.30. During the session, the Sensex touched an intraday high of 75,810.97 before paring gains.

Nifty Bank climbed 615.95 points, or 1.15 percent, to 54,055.35. Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among top Sensex gainers. Sun Pharma, ITC, and Power Grid were among the biggest decliners.

Investor sentiment improved after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cited progress in peace discussions. The rupee recovered 63 paise to close provisionally at 95.73 per dollar. The Reserve Bank of India injected liquidity through a three-day variable rate repo auction. Crude oil traded below $105 per barrel, easing inflation concerns.

For the week, the Sensex gained nearly 200 points and the Nifty about 76 points, adding over Rs 2.4 lakh crore to total BSE market capitalization. Trent, Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever, and Bajaj Finance also advanced. Foreign institutional selling remained a concern despite the session gains. U.S. and Iranian negotiators remained divided over uranium stockpiles and Strait of Hormuz controls.
