South Korea’s former defense minister Kim Yong Hyun received a 30-year prison sentence Friday alongside ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol in the military drone case.
Seoul Central District Court convicted Kim for his role in ordering drone incursions over Pyongyang in October 2024. Prosecutors said the flights were designed to justify declaring martial law.
Kim had served as Yoon’s defense chief during the period when the incursions occurred. Both men were already serving life sentences related to Yoon’s brief martial law declaration in December 2024.
The court’s ruling underscored the breadth of accountability for senior officials involved in the drone operation and the constitutional crisis that followed.
