South Korea’s Ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison Over North Korea Drone Flights

On June 12, 2026, Seoul Central District Court sentenced ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to 30 years in prison for ordering military drone flights over North Korea.

Prosecutors said the incursions took place in October 2024 as Yoon sought to justify declaring martial law. The court found he had used the flights to escalate tensions with Pyongyang.

Yoon was already serving a life sentence related to his martial law declaration. The drone conviction added a separate 30-year term to his existing imprisonment.

The ruling marked another legal setback for the former president, whose brief imposition of martial law in December 2024 triggered a constitutional crisis and his removal from office.
