Chinese authorities detained U.S. citizen Min Zin at Kunming airport on suspicion of espionage and endangering national security, Beijing said Friday.
Min Zin leads a Myanmar-focused think tank and was taken into custody as he traveled through southwestern China. Chinese officials did not disclose additional details about the case.
The detention adds strain to already tense U.S.-China relations and raises questions about access to legal counsel for foreign nationals held on security charges in China.
The U.S. State Department had not immediately commented on whether consular officers had been granted access to Min Zin.
