Sports Ministry establishes NITI Aayog-backed 10-member task force to explore Formula 1 revival by 2028

The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports constituted a high-level ten-member task force on Thursday, in formal collaboration with NITI Aayog, to prepare a strategic roadmap for the revival of the Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix by the 2028 motorsport season. The committee is chaired by senior policy administrator Yugal Kishore Joshi and includes representatives from motorsport federations, hospitality sectors, and infrastructure authorities.

The task force has been assigned to conduct an exhaustive evaluation of existing track infrastructure at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, identify required facility modernization works, and resolve historical taxation and customs classification obstacles that previously complicated international racing logistics. The panel will also explore public-private concession structures to ensure long-term commercial viability without burdensome state subsidies.

Motorsport enthusiasts and corporate sponsors hailed the government’s proactive initiative, citing the rapid global popularity of Formula 1 among Indian youth and the massive tourism revenues generated by international racing weekends. The committee is mandated to submit its preliminary viability study and international promoter engagement strategy to the central cabinet within four months.
