Streets go quiet in Humayunpur after MCD crackdown at Delhi’s popular food hub

Streets in Delhi’s Humayunpur food hub fell quiet after municipal crews sealed multiple restaurants during a crackdown on building-code and fire-safety violations, vendors said Friday.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi posted notices citing illegal encroachments, expired safety certifications and blocked emergency exits in crowded lanes popular with students and tourists.

Owners argued some closures were abrupt, leaving staff unpaid and perishable stock spoiling in locked kitchens.

Urban planners have long flagged Humayunpur’s dense seating and improvised wiring as hazards, but enforcement historically arrived in sporadic waves.

Customers who relied on late-night eateries now travel to neighboring markets, while sealed businesses hire lawyers to challenge orders in appellate tribunals.

Officials said re-inspections will determine which establishments may reopen after structural fixes and fee payments.
