Trump Says It Would Be Great if Putin and Zelenskyy Meet

U.S. President Donald Trump said it would be great if Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met for direct peace talks, following Zelenskyy’s open letter requesting a face-to-face meeting.

Zelenskyy published the letter Thursday urging Putin to discuss ending the war. Putin rejected the proposal on Friday at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, saying he saw no point in such a meeting for now.

Trump’s comment came as the United States has shifted some diplomatic attention toward the conflict involving Iran. Zelenskyy acknowledged in his letter that Washington’s foreign policy priorities have changed.

Putin said experts should develop solutions before any summit and that Ukraine would need to halt the advance of Russian forces.
